Apple Acquires Justin Timberlake’s Palmer, Reveals Ted Lasso

-

On the heels of the debut of Greyhound, and landing the films Emancipation, Killers of the Flower Moon and Snow Blind, Apple is expanding its slate of sought-after original films with Palmer, starring Justin Timberlake and directed by Fisher Stevens, from SK Global.

Written by Cheryl Guerriero, Palmer follows a former college football phenomenon named Eddie Palmer (played by Timberlake) who, after a stint in prison, returns to his hometown to get his life back on track. There, he faces not only lingering conflicts from his past but also a much more surprising challenge as he finds himself suddenly in charge of a unique young boy who has been abandoned by his wayward mother.

Along with Timberlake, Palmer stars Juno Temple, Academy Award nominee June Squibb, Alisha Wainright, and introduces Ryder Allen.

An SK Global, Rhea Films and Nadler No GMO Popcorn Co. project, in association with the Hercules Film Fund, Palmer is produced by Sidney Kimmel, John Penotti, Charlie Corwin, Daniel Nadler and Academy Award-winning producer Charles B. Wessler.

The film is executive produced by Terry Dougas, Jean-Luc De Fanti, Mark O’Connor, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis and Bruce Toll. The script for the film appeared on the 2016 Blacklist.

Penotti and Corwin said, “We are excited to partner with Apple on this project as they continue to expand their impressive slate. It’s our hope that audiences around the world will connect with this sincerely touching story and we’re confident that ‘Palmer’ has found the right home.”

The deal was negotiated on behalf of SK Global by Head of Business and Legal Affairs Brian Kornreich, with Endeavor Content and CAA Media Finance representing the sale.

Palmer joins Apple original films, including the recently announced Snow Blind, with Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star; Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro; and Emancipation, from director Antoine Fuqua and starring and produced by Academy Award nominee Will Smith.

Also coming to the streaming service are Sharper, a new film from Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, starring and produced by Academy Award winner Julianne Moore; The Sky Is Everywhere, based on the best-selling YA novel of the same name; and the feature On the Rocks from Sofia Coppola, starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones.

Apple has also unveiled a first look at Ted Lasso, a new original comedy series from Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence, that will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, August 14.

Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.

In addition to starring, Sudeikis serves as executive producer, alongside Lawrence (Scrubs) via his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content. Doozer’s Jeff Ingold also serves as an executive producer with Liza Katzer as co-executive producer. The series was developed by Sudeikis, Lawrence, Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt, and is based on the pre-existing format and characters from NBC Sports.
