Producer Jon Landau has some good news for Avatar fans today. The Avatar 2 production is headed back to New Zealand next week! Landau posted the above photo on his social channels and said: “Our Avatar sets are ready — and we couldn’t be more excited to be headed back to New Zealand next week. Check out the Matador, a high speed forward command vessel (bottom) and the Picador jetboat (top).”
While production on the Avatar sequels was shut down, Landau did share some more great photos. Earlier this month he shared the following photo of Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis at the surface of the 900,000 gallon performance capture tank they built.
Before that, he also revealed a couple of behind-the-scenes photos of James Cameron giving the actors direction before they dive underwater to capture performances for a scene from the Avatar sequels.
“What is the white stuff on the water surface?” he said. “They are small white balls that are needed to prevent the lights from above contaminating the performance capture system below… while still allowing anyone below to surface safely through them should the need arise.”
And he began the series of photos with this pic, which shows Landau with Sigourney Weaver and Joel David Moore back in the Site 26 Shack set for some scenes for the new movies.
Avatar 2, expected to be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, is scheduled to be released by Disney’s 20th Century Fox on December 17, 2021. Avatar: The Seed Bearer will follow on December 22, 2023.
Then Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa are coming to theaters on December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the Avatar sequels. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, and Jemaine Clement are also on board.
The young members of the Sully family are played by Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, and Trinity Bliss, while the Metkayina Clan members are played by Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans Jr. Jack Champion is playing Javier “Spider” Socorro, a human teenager, born at Hell’s Gate but who prefers his time in the Pandoran rainforest more than the asphalt of Hell’s Gate.
The Avatar sequels will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The James Cameron-directed sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
