David Arquette Returning for Scream Reboot, Neve Campbell in Talks

-

Spyglass Media Group announced today that David Arquette will be returning as Dwight “Dewey” Riley in the upcoming Scream reboot. The news comes shortly after Neve Campbell revealed that she has also been in early talks, but her return as Sidney Prescott isn’t confirmed yet.

Dewey Riley is the deputy sheriff of Woodsboro, the brother of Tatum Riley and friend of Sidney Prescott. The character appeared in all four Scream movies. Dewey was originally going to die in the first movie, but director Wes Craven added an additional scene — in which he’s placed in an ambulance — after test audiences reacted positively to the character.

“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” said Arquette. “Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Helming the Scream reboot will be Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence. They will direct from a script by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not). Kevin Williamson, who previously wrote Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4, is also returning and will executive produce.

“It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers,” said Radio Silence.

“Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.”

Spyglass Media Group is hoping to begin principal photography later this year in Wilmington, North Caroline. Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak are producing via their Project X.

Earlier this month, Neve Campbell said she had been in talks to return as Sidney Prescott, the lead character in the first four Scream movies. “I definitely had a period where I was thinking it would just be too odd to do a movie without Wes, and I wasn’t certain that I would want to do that. But, I think enough time has passed.”

She added: “I got this really, really respectful letter from the directors of the new one. They came to me with Scream 5, and these directors are incredibly talented. They wrote a letter honoring Wes in such a beautiful way, and they expressed that the reason they make horror movies is because of Wes and the Scream films.

“They also expressed how blown away they are at the idea of actually getting an opportunity to make one of them and how much they want to honor and respect Wes’ vision. It was just beautiful, and I was really grateful. I had really thought that the only way I’d step into a new project with new directors is if they really wanted to honor him.”

Campbell mentioned that they were only in the beginning stages of negotiations for the Scream reboot. “There are a lot of things up in the air, such as when we’ll actually get to make the movie and how we can even reenter this business at the moment.”

The Scream movies have grossed over $608 million worldwide. The first film was released in December of 1996 and was followed by Scream 2 in December of 1997. The third movie came to theaters in February of 2000 and was expected to be the last installment. Eleven years later, Scream 4 was released to theaters in April of 2011, however.
