Taika Waititi and Leslye Headland Star Wars Projects Confirmed

With it being May the 4th, aka Star Wars Day, it’s appropriate that Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed two previously-rumored Star Wars projects that will be helmed by Taika Waititi and Leslye Headland.

Academy Award winner Taika Waititi, who recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and directed the widely-acclaimed first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release.

Joining Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, 1917.

Taika Waititi is best known for directing Thor: Ragnarok and he’s also scheduled to helm Disney’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which is scheduled to open on February 11, 2022. His credits also include Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows, Boy, and the Oscar-nominated short film, Two Cars, One Night. He is currently in post-production on the feature film Next Goal Wins.

In addition, Emmy-nominated writer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll, Bachelorette) is currently developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the in-development series, which adds to a growing list of Star Wars stories for Disney’s streaming platform.

The projects include The Mandalorian, now in post-production on Season 2, and two other previously-ordered series: one based on Cassian Andor prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and another following the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

In more Star Wars news, D23 is bringing you a cast reunion from the hit series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The talent will include Ashley Eckstein, Catherine Taber, Dee Bradley Baker, James Arnold Taylor, Matt Lanter, and Sam Witwer.

You’ll be able to check out the event — Star Wars: The Clone Wars Cast Reunion Challenge — on Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST via D23’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Also, Disney+ today is honoring the global Star Wars fan community with the largest Star Wars content release since the service launched in November.

With today’s addition of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the complete Skywalker saga, the series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, series premiere of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, concept art takeovers, and new avatar choices, there’s something for every Star Wars fan on Disney+.

And today there’s also a free update for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order! The update brings a host of new challenges for Cal and BD-1 to take on.

Included are: A new Meditation Training feature allows you to test yourself against waves of powerful enemies in arenas across the galaxy; craft your own to take on your most hated foes and alongside your favorite allies; unlock new customization awards and embrace your dark side with the Cal Inquisitor outfit; and experience Cal’s epic journey anew in New Journey +, this time with all the cosmetics you’ve discovered unlocked.
