Transformers Movies and G.I. Joe Sequel Announced

-

Even though the majority of Hollywood is on hold, there’s still a lot happening in the worlds of Hasbro’s properties. Just this week, there’s been announcements about a G.I. Joe sequel to the upcoming Snake Eyes and more Transformers movies, both animated and live action.

According to the Hollywood trades, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have begun developing another G.I. Joe movie, Paramount has given a release date for a live-action Transformers film, and an animated Transformers project is also in the works.

G.I. Joe Sequel to Snake Eyes

With G.I. Joe movie Snake Eyes still scheduled for an October 23, 2020 release, a follow-up to that film is already in the works with Seberg writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Shrapnel and Waterhouse also adapted Ex Machina adaptation, The Great Machine, and the upcoming Rebecca. They did some uncredited polishing work on Snake Eyes as well.

The trade says that “the idea for the project is to build on Snake Eyes, making it not quite a sequel but rather an expansion to take audience goers deeper into the world of Joe.”

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is producing Snake Eyes, will produce with Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures.

Directed by Robert Schwentke (Divergent films), Snake Eyes stars Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, A Simple Favor, Last Christmas) as the title character, as well as Andrew Koji, Samara Weaving, Úrsula Corberó, Haruka Abe, Iko Uwais, and Takehiro Hira.

Snake Eyes is said to center on the character seeking revenge for his father’s death by joining the Arashikage Clan, a ninja clan based in Japan.

Brian Goldner is also producing Snake Eyes. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are executive producing.

Optimus Prime and Bumblebee in TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT, from Paramount Pictures.

Transformers Movies

The Transformers movies have already grossed over $4.3 billion worldwide, so it’s no surprise that Paramount Pictures is developing more. Deadline says the studio has given a June 24, 2022 release date for the next live-action installment.

Paramount is working on two different live-action projects. One is by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), which is said to be the Beast Wars spinoff, and the other comes from Joby Harold (Army of the Dead). The latter will reportedly be set in the Bumblebee universe.

Shatter and Dropkick in BUMBLEBEE, from Paramount Pictures.

In addition to those projects, Paramount has also hired Toy Story 4 co-writer/director Josh Cooley to directed an animated Transformers feature film, says The Hollywood Reporter. The film’s script was written by Ant-Man and The Wasp writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari.

Hasbro’s Entertainment One will develop and produce the film along with Paramount Animation.

Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie and Bumblebee in BUMBLEBEE from Paramount Pictures.

The trade says the movie will act as a prequel to the live-action Transformers movies “and will explore the origin of the heroic Megatron and the seeds of conflict between the harmony-seeking Autobots and domination-loving Decepticons.”
