Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland Developing New Star Wars Series

-

If you were hoping even more Star Wars series were on the way, today is your day. Variety is reporting that Russian Doll co-creator, showrunner and executive producer Leslye Headland is developing a new Star Wars series for the Disney+ streaming service.

The trade says that, while details of the plot are being kept under wraps, the project is a “female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the ‘Star Wars’ timeline than other projects.” Headland is expected to write and serve as showrunner on the series.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that the deal was concluded several months ago and Headland even attended the Los Angeles premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

In addition to the Emmy Award-winning Russian Doll, Headland’s credits also include Bachelorette with Kirsten Dunst, Sleeping with Other People, Terriers, Blunt Talk, SMILF, and Black Monday.

The news comes following word that Jon Favreau has already been writing season three of Disney+ series The Mandalorian for a while and that the art department has been creating concepts for Season 3. This is well ahead of the second season premiere in October 2020. The second season of the first live-action Star Wars series wrapped production in early March.

The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. It stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, Nick Nolte, Emily Swallow, Taika Waititi, Giancarlo Esposito, and Omid Abtahi.

Also in development for Disney+ is a live-action series centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It was recently revealed that Kyle Soller (Poldark) and Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl, Marvel Studios films) have joined the series. Alan Tudyk will reprise the role of K-2S0 as well.

Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote Rogue One, will write the pilot and direct multiple episodes of the series. Gilroy also directed reshoots for the film, which hit theaters in December 2016 and went on to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Stephen Schiff, of the critically-acclaimed show The Americans, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The series is expected to launch on the streaming service in 2021.

The show follows the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One. The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.

Another Disney+ Star Wars series in the works is one focused on Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) will direct that series, which takes place eight years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Chow, Hossein Amini, and McGregor will serve as executive producers alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Jason McGatlin, Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President Production, will serve as co-producer.
