Giacchino on The Batman Movie Score and Eiza Gonzales Was Up for Catwoman

-

Production on director Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie was shut down for two weeks earlier this month, although that delay will undoubtedly last much longer now that we’re learning how severe the worldwide health crisis is.

The Batman had reportedly been shooting on a sound stage in London since January and was planning to change locations to Liverpool. It is unknown if the shutdown will impact the film’s June 25, 2021 release date.

While we wait on further word, The Batman movie composer Michael Giacchino got a chance to talk to Collider about what we can expect for the score. Reeves and Giacchino have worked together on multiple films, beginning with Cloverfield in 2008. They also worked together on Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes.

“I felt total freedom to do whatever I want,” Giacchino told the site. “Matt always agreed, this is our Batman, this is our vision. In the same way that I always loved, what I still do about Batman comics and graphic novels is that each of these artist, each of these authors they take their own crack at what they want this to be. It’s their version of Batman.”

He added: “I love it when I see a graphic novel of Batman in the 1800s. To me that is cool. I love that. I’m not the kind of person that says Batman must always be this. It’s like no, why? It can be whatever the artist wants to be and it has over the years done that, many times over. I love the idea of taking something and just kind of doing our version of it.”

You can hear the first bit of music from the film in the camera test that was released by Matt Reeves.

Giacchino said more music has been recorded. “I did go over and record that for that. We recorded a bunch of other music as well for it, a bunch of themes and things that nobody has heard yet. But they’ll all be popping up as the film gets underway again and starts getting back to production, and life gets back to normal, hopefully soon.”

In related news, Baby DriverAlita: Battle AngelHobbs & Shaw and Bloodshot star Eiza González told The Hollywood Reporter she was up for the role of Catwoman in The Batman movie, a role that eventually went to Zoë Kravitz. González said she even camera-tested for the role and it was impossible not to get her hopes up.

“It’s impossible not to do that, especially when you get so far down the line. It’s part of why you’re so far down the line, because you’re living and dreaming the character,” she explained.

“It is heartbreaking; it is always hard. You have to envision yourself in the role in order to see the role. You can’t have one foot in and one foot out. When I started my career, I was more like that, and I wouldn’t get that far. So now I do, and I just go through the heartbreak afterwards.”

John Turturro (the Transformers films) will play Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven, Black Mass) is Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál.

Also appearing are Andy Serkis (the Planet of the Apes films, Black Panther) as Alfred and Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Dumbo) as Oswald Cobblepot.

Reeves and Dylan Clark (the Planet of the Apes films) are producing The Batman movie, with Simon Emanuel, Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada and Chantal Nong Vo serving as executive producers.

Reeves’ behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Greig Fraser (Lion, upcoming Dune), his Planet of the Apes production designer, James Chinlund, and editors William Hoy (the Planet of the Apes films) and Tyler Nelson (Rememory).

The effects are headed up by Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (The Jungle Book) and Oscar-nominated SFX supervisor Dominic Tuohy (1917, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker).

Also on board are Oscar-nominated sound mixer Stuart Wilson (1917, the Star Wars franchise); Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran (1917, Little Women, Anna Karenina) and costume designers Glyn Dillon (the Star Wars franchise) and David Crossman (1917, the Star Wars franchise); hair designer Zoe Tahir (upcoming No Time to Die, Spectre); and Oscar-nominated makeup designer Naomi Donne (1917).
