Netflix has debuted the Uncorked trailer, which gives you a first look at the film launching on the streaming service on March 27, 2020. The movie was written and directed by Prentice Penny (Insecure).
The project marks veteran television writer/producer Penny’s feature directorial debut. Principal photography began in November of 2018 in Memphis, Tennessee, and filming also took place in Paris, France.
The movie stars Mamoudou Athie (Patti Cake$, The Front Runner), Golden Globe nominee and Emmy Award winner Courtney B. Vance (Ben is Back, American Crime Story), and multi-Emmy Award nominee Niecy Nash (Selma, Claws, Getting On).
Also part of the cast are Matt McGorry, Sasha Compere, Gil Ozeri, Kelly Jenrette, Bernard David Jones, and Meera Rohit Kumbhani.
In Uncorked, fueled by his love for wine, Elijah enrolls in a course to become a master sommelier, an elite designation given only to a handful who are able to pass its notoriously difficult exam. It’s a dream that upends the expectations of his father, Louis (Courtney B. Vance), who insists Elijah take over the popular Memphis barbeque joint that’s been passed down from father to son since its inception.
Elijah struggles with the demands of school and a new relationship, while Louis wrestles with the feelings of his son rejecting the family business until a tragedy forces both of them to slow things down.
Uncorked is a hilarious and touching drama about a father and son who have to finally learn to listen to one another.
“It’s rare that Black people get to tell a father-son story without the father’s absence serving as the catalyst for the story,” said Penny when the project was announced. “That was never my experience and I think it’s more important than ever that art reflects our humanity and who we are as regular people, rather than just being defined by the color of our skin or the trauma that has happened to us.”
Penny added: “I’m incredibly grateful to Netflix and our entire producing team for not only understanding that vision, but for wholeheartedly supporting it too. To be able to tell this story, inspired by the relationship I have with my own father, is exciting for so many reasons; and to have actors like Mamoudou, Courtney and Niecy, each talented beyond measure, on board to bring this story to life with me is beyond my wildest dreams for this project.”
The producers include Datari Turner, Forge Media’s Chris Pollack, Mandalay Pictures’ Jason Michael Berman, Argent Pictures’ Jill Ahrens, Ryan Ahrens, and Ben Renzo, and Prentice Penny. The executive producers are Mandalay Pictures’ Patrick Raymond and Veronica Nickel.
