Christina Aguilera’s Loyal Brave True for Mulan Revealed

-

Multi-platinum and global award-winning superstar singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera has recorded a new original song, “Loyal Brave True,” and “Reflection (2020)” for Disney’s Mulan. Both songs will be featured in the film and on the Walt Disney Records soundtrack, with score composed and conducted by Harry Gregson-Williams, set for release on March 25.

“Loyal Brave True” is available today as a single. The song was written by Jamie Hartman, Harry Gregson-Williams, Rosi Golan and Billy Crabtree, and produced by Jamie Hartman.

President of Music & Soundtracks for Walt Disney Studios, Mitchell Leib, approached the artist on behalf of the project. “Christina is one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Her original performance of ‘Reflection’ from the animated film when she was a then 16-year-old unknown, holds its appropriate place in the history of music and was a launch pad for her unparalleled career that would follow.

‘As this epic live-action version of ‘Mulan’ heads to theaters, Christina brings her innate abilities and years of growth as an artist to the film, reprising ‘Reflection’ and performing the new song ‘Loyal Brave True.’ I think these songs will touch today’s moviegoers in that powerful way we saw 22 years ago.”

Aguilera said, “The film ‘Mulan’ and the song ‘Reflection’ coincided with getting me my first record deal. It’s amazing to come back to such an incredible movie that’s full of power and meaning, and that meaning holds the test of time: staying true to yourself, being who you are, and teaching how to be fearless. My new song, ‘Loyal Brave True,’ represents the fine balance between vulnerability and strength.”

“Reflection (2020)” is produced by Gregson-Williams. The original 1998 classic was written by David Zippel and Matthew Wilder. Music videos for both tracks featuring Aguilera will be directed by Mulan feature director Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife, McFarland, USA) and released later this month.

Music from both songs is featured in Harry Gregson Williams’ underscore with Aguilera’s full-length versions appearing in the film’s custom main-on-end title design.

In addition to the “Loyal Brave True” lyric video and special look above, The Walt Disney Studios has also revealed two new pieces of exclusive artwork for ScreenX and 4DX. You can view both posters below.

The Mulan cast is led by Yifei Liu (The Forbidden Kingdom, Once Upon a Time), who was cast as Hua Mulan following a year-long global casting search. The Walt Disney Studios will release the anticipated movie opens in theaters on March 27, 2020.

The fearless and spirited eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Mulan is the apple of her father’s eye. When the Emperor mobilizes his troops to fight the onslaught of invaders from the North, she masquerades as a man to take the place of her ailing father under the name Hua Jun, setting her on an adventure that will transform her into a legendary warrior.

Joining Yifei Liu in the film are Donnie Yen (Star Wars: Rogue One), Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), Yoson An (The Meg), and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect).

Also starring are Ron Yuan (Marco Polo), Tzi Ma (Arrival), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Nelson Lee; Chum Ehelepola, with Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha, Raise the Red Lantern) and Jet Li (Shaolin Temple, Lethal Weapon 4).

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father.

Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation… and a proud father.

Mulan is directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland USA) from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Jurassic World, In the Heart of the Sea) and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”

The producers are Jason T. Reed (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Chris Bender (A History of Violence) and Jake Weiner (Criminal) with Barrie M. Osborne (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Monster Hunt) and Tim Coddington (Crazy Rich Asians) serving as executive producers.

Filming began in August 2018 and lasted through November, taking place in New Zealand and China.

Disney’s 1998 animated feature (available at Amazon) starred Ming-Na Wen, Miguel Ferrer and Eddie Murphy and was nominated for an Oscar and two Golden Globe Awards. The story of the legendary warrior is one of China’s most popular folktales, and is still a part of the curriculum in Chinese schools today.
