The Suicide Squad Filming Has Wrapped for a 2021 Release

-

Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn has revealed on his social channels that The Suicide Squad filming has officially wrapped. You can view his post, which includes a photo of the cast and crew, below. The Suicide Squad filming began on September 23, 2019.

“And that’s a wrap on #TheSuicideSquad,” says Gunn. “My father died two weeks before we started filming and my dog died two weeks before the end. It was a hard, hard time in my life and yet the most fulfilling time I’ve ever had making a movie.”

He added: “The professionalism, talent, compassion and kindness of this cast and crew inspired me every day. Thanks to everyone involved in this film, in every stage of development, in every department – I am grateful from the bottom of my heart for you all. You are why I make movies.”

Written and directed by Gunn, Warner Bros. Pictures‘ The Suicide Squad will open in theaters on August 6, 2021 release.

The Suicide Squad cast includes David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), John Cena, Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, and Pete Davidson.

Also starring are Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Idris Elba, Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), and Michael Rooker.

Charles Roven and Peter Safran are producing the feature film. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder serve as executive producers.

Returning from the first Suicide Squad movie (available at Amazon) are Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and Margot Robbie. Directed by David Ayer, the film also starred Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez, and Jared Leto.

Suicide Squad cost about $175 million and grossed an impressive $746.8 million worldwide. The August 2016 release is officially described as follows:

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity.

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

The spinoff Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (available at Amazon) also opened in theaters on February 7, 2020. Directed by Cathy Yan, the movie has grossed $178.4 million worldwide, with $74.7 million coming from North America and $103.7 million from overseas markets.

Margot Robbie reprised the role of Harley Quinn in the film and was joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra “Cass” Cain, and Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis.

Birds of Prey is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.
