James Mangold Replacing Spielberg as Indiana Jones 5 Director

-

Here’s a shocker! Steven Spielberg will not be directing Indiana Jones 5. According to Variety, Spielberg is handing the reins to James Mangold for the first time in the franchise’s 39-year history.

The trade says that, while the deal hasn’t closed, the Logan and Ford v Ferrari filmmaker is in talks to take the job. James Mangold has also directed Cop Land (1997), Girl, Interrupted (1999), Kate & Leopold (2001), Identity (2003), and Walk the Line (2005), 3:10 to Yuma (2007), Knight and Day (2010) and The Wolverine (2013).

Mangold received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Logan and Ford v Ferrari was nominated for Best Picture.

Spielberg will still produce. “The decision to leave the director’s chair was entirely Spielberg’s, in a desire to pass along Indy’s whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story,” said the Hollywood trade.

Harrison Ford is still attached to star. He said recently that he would be starting Indiana Jones 5 in two months (which would have been in April 2019), though he later clarified that the actual filming would start this summer.

It was previously announced that the release date for the fifth installment had been set by The Walt Disney Studios for July 9, 2021. It is unclear if a new director means a later release date.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked about the status of Indiana Jones 5 earlier this month. “We are working away and getting the script where we want it to be and then we’ll be ready to go,” she said. “Harrison Ford will be involved. It’s not a reboot… a continuation.” She said that Ford can’t wait to do the film.

Jonathan Kasdan worked on the script after original screenwriter David Koepp left the project. The Indiana Jones character was created by George Lucas.

Harrison Ford has played Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones, Jr. in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). All the films were directed by Spielberg.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull grossed $790.7 million worldwide, with $317.1 million from North American theaters and $473.5 from overseas markets.

Steven Spielberg has said that he expects Indiana Jones 5 to be Harrison Ford’s last turn as Indiana Jones, but he thinks the franchise will continue beyond the fifth installment as well.

What do you think about James Mangold directing the fifth installment? What are you hoping to see in the new movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
