Sam Raimi in Talks to Direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

-

Sam Raimi, who directed the first three Spider-Man movies (buy at Amazon) at Sony Pictures, is in talks to direct Marvel Studios sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, according to Variety.

He would replace Scott Derrickson, who directed the first Doctor Strange movie but departed the sequel due to creative differences. Derrickson will still executive produce the film, which is still scheduled to start production in May.

Sam Raimi is known for creating the Evil Dead series and directed the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco. He also directed such films as Darkman (1990), A Simple Plan (1998), The Gift (2000), Drag Me to Hell (2009), and Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful (2013). He’s produced TV series like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess as well.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be back for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is still scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2021. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also expected back, however the trade adds that Rachel McAdams will not reprise her role of Christine Palmer. No reason is given.

Elizabeth Olsen will also reprise her role as Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, for a storyline that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has said will continue from Disney+ series WandaVision, which premieres this December.

Derrickson directed and co-wrote the first film, which grossed $677.7 million worldwide in 2016 on a budget of $165 million.

Marvel StudiosDoctor Strange is the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange, whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place—a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj.

He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange—armed with newly acquired magical powers—is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
