Kingdom Story Company has closed a deal for American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, the next film from the Erwin Brothers, who will also produce through their Kingdom banner alongside partner Kevin Downes.
The film has been fast-tracked for production and will be distributed wide by Lionsgate on December 18, 2020. Kingdom is casting now, including the lead roles of Kurt Warner and Brenda Warner.
The Erwin Brothers (Jon Erwin and Andrew Erwin) will direct the film, written by David Aaron Cohen (Friday Night Lights), Jon Gunn (I Still Believe) and Jon Erwin (I Still Believe). Kurt Warner and Brenda Warner will co-produce.
The drama chronicles the incredible true story of Kurt Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to become a two time NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback.
Kingdom acquired Warner’s life rights. The screenplay will be based upon interviews with Warner as well as Warner’s memoir, All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season.
Kurt Warner said: “For the longest time I dreamed of having a story similar to many of my heroes, but as my journey began to stray further and further from that path, I wondered why me? As I look back on that journey now I believe I am finally able to answer that question. I believe God has taken me on this journey to inspire others that no matter what life may throw at you, your dreams can still come true.”
He added: “I am extremely excited to be working with Lionsgate and the Erwin Bros to bring this story to life on the big screen, in hopes of encouraging all who see it to never stop believing in themselves and what God can do with them!”
The Erwin Brothers jointly said: “Kurt lived the ultimate underdog story, it’s one of perseverance, dedication and tenacity, but also one of the powers behind the scenes – his family and his faith – that led him to victory. His story is bigger than football and inspiring to dreamers everywhere, and we’re excited to be getting started.”
American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story marks the third film to be greenlit by Lionsgate in the last 12 months. I Still Believe, a biopoic of Christian music star Jeremy Camp, is set for release on March 13, 2020.
