Robert Zemeckis, who is currently in post-production for Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Witches, is reteaming with the studio for the sci-fi thriller Ares, according to The Hollywood Reporer. Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who wrote Captain Marvel and Tomb Raider, penned the original script.
According to the site, Ares is described as follows: “The story… tells of an astronaut whose space capsule crash lands in an African desert. As he rushes to reunite with his family, it is revealed that the mission was part of a larger conspiracy and that he may be carrying a secret that could forever change the world.”
The project was previously set up at MGM. Roland Emmerich and his Centropolis Entertainment were on board to produce back then, but Emmerich will still executive produce.
In addition to directing, Zemeckis will produce along with his ImageMovers partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich’s Rideback is also producing, as is Kristin Winkler. Ryan Halprin and Jackie Levine will executive produce.
Zemeckis is also developing Disney’s live-action Pinocchio movie and it’s unclear which project will go first.
Robert Zemeckis has directed such classics as the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Forrest Gump. For the latter, he won an Academy Award for Best Director and the film itself won Best Picture. Other Zemeckis credits include Death Becomes Her, Contact, What Lies Beneath, Cast Away, The Polar Express, Beowulf, A Christmas Carol, Flight, The Walk and Welcome to Marwen.
