Frozen 2 Ices the Competition with Another $125 Million Worldwide

For the third weekend in a row, Walt Disney Animation Studios sequel Frozen II topped the worldwide box office with another $125 million. In North America, the film added $34.7 million and is up to $337.6 million. Frozen II also earned another $90.2 million from 48 international markets to take its overseas total to $582.1 million. That means the movie has now grossed $919.7 million globally. The top international territories include China with $104.4 million, Korea with $75.5 million, Japan with $55 million, the UK with $43.1 million and Germany with $34.4 million. The first film earned $400 million domestically and $873.5 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $1.274 billion.

Frozen II comes from the Academy Award-winning team — directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, and producer Peter Del Vecho — and features the voices of Idina MenzelKristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, and the music of Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Remaining in second place was writer/director Rian Johnson’s whodunnit Knives Out (Lionsgate and MRC), which added $14.2 million and has earned $63.5 million domestically after two weeks. The worldwide total for the film is at $124.1 million. Knives Out stars Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jeaden Martell, and Christopher Plummer.

Disney’s 20th Century Fox release Ford v Ferrari kept its third spot with $6.5 million and has earned $91.1 million in North America after four weeks. The James Mangold drama also brought in $8.3 million internationally this weekend and is up to $76.5 million overseas, for a global sum of $167.6 million. Matt Damon and Christian Bale play American car designer Carroll Shelby and British driver Ken Miles, respectively, in the $97.6 million movie which also stars Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Tracy Letts, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, Remo Girone, and Ray McKinnon.

Coming in at No. 4 was Universal Pictures drama Queen & Slim, which collected $6.5 million and has grossed $26.9 million after two weeks. rom director Melina Matsoukas and writer Lena Waithe, the film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine, Chloë Sevigny, Flea, John Sturgill Simpson, and Indya Moore.

TriStar Pictures’ A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, rounded out the top five with $5.2 million to take its three-week total to $43.1 million. Directed by Marielle Heller and featuring Tom Hanks as Mister Rogers, the film also stars Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Cooper.

Focus Features’ Dark Waters expanded to 2,012 theaters and climbed to sixth place with $4.1 million. The film has earned $5.28 million after three weeks of release. Directed by Todd Haynes, the drama stars Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Bill Camp, Victor Garber, Mare Winningham, William Jackson Harper, and Bill Pullman.

And in what will be remembered as one of the worst ever openings, STXfilms’ Playmobil: The Movie debuted with just $670,000 from 2,337 theaters. That’s a per-theater average of only $287. Yikes. Directed by Lino DiSalvo, the film is voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor and Daniel Radcliffe.
