Lionsgate and Roland Emmerich Team Up on Sci-Fi Epic Moonfall

After successfully collaborating with Roland Emmerich on the retelling of the legendary battle of Midway, Lionsgate is joining forces once again with the filmmaker, acquiring North American rights to his forthcoming sci-fi epic Moonfall from his production company Centropolis Entertainment, it was announced today by Joe Drake, Chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Moonfall will begin production in 2020 and will be directed by Emmerich from a script by Emmerich and his 2012 co-writer Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. A cast has not been set yet.

In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation.

Emmerich is producing Moonfall under his Centropolis banner with Kloser producing through his company, Street Entertainment. AGC sold North American rights to Lionsgate and is handling worldwide sales. At Cannes in May, Centropolis and AGC conducted a high profile sales launch, emerging with high eight figures in deals. Centropolis raised equity funding together with CAA Media Finance and AGC. As with Midway, Emmerich and Centropolis are independently producing and financing Moonfall, overseeing all aspects of production, financing, and delivery, and collaborating with Lionsgate and its worldwide partners on marketing and distribution.

“Roland Emmerich is the undisputed master of spectacular high-concept epics, and the premise and promise of Moonfall is the kind of action tent pole that will be event movie-going in 2021,” said Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, who oversaw the deal for Lionsgate. “This is the kind of visual theatrical entertainment that Roland does better than anyone and we are thrilled to partner with him yet again.”
