Halo Filming Begins: The Upcoming Showtime Series

-

Showtime has announced the Halo filming is beginning! In a social post (see below) featuring a photo of the cast, the network said: “The cast is assembled. The table reads are complete. Production on the Showtime Halo series is about to begin!” The highly-anticipated series is based on the iconic Xbox franchise and will film in Budapest, Hungary.

Emmy and Tony nominee Pablo Schreiber (First Man, Orange Is the New Black) plays Master Chief, Earth’s most advanced warrior in the 26th century and the only hope of salvation for a civilization pushed to the brink of destruction by the Covenant, an unstoppable alliance of alien worlds committed to the destruction of humanity.

Natascha McElhone (Californication), Emmy nominee Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo), celebrated Indian actress Shabana Azmi (Fire), Bentley Kalu (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Natasha Culzac (The Witcher) and Kate Kennedy (Catastrophe) co-star.

McElhone will play two characters – Dr. Catherine Halsey, the brilliant, conflicted and inscrutable creator of the Spartan supersoldiers and Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history, and potentially the key to the survival of the human race. Woodbine will play Soren-066, a morally complex privateer at the fringes of human civilization whose fate will bring him into conflict with his former military masters and his old friend, the Master Chief. Azmi will play Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence.

The series will also introduce three all-new characters to the Halo universe. British actor Kalu will play Spartan Vannak-134, a cybernetically augmented supersoldier conscripted at childhood who serves as the defacto deputy to the Master Chief. British actress Culzac will star in the role of Spartan Riz-028 – a focused, professional and deadly, cybernetically enhanced killing machine. Kennedy stars as Spartan Kai-125, an all-new courageous, curious and deadly Spartan supersoldier. Yerin Ha was previously announced playing the new character Kwan Ha, a shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both.

In addition to the Halo filming news, Showtime has announced that Danny Sapani, Olive Gray, and Charlie Murphy have also joined the show. Sapani will play Captain Jacob Keyes, a dedicated military man, a war hero and a caring father. He finds that working alongside his daughter and his ex-wife is usually the cause of conflict rather than comfort. Gray plays Dr. Miranda Keyes, a brilliant UNSC Commander who is dedicated to understanding the technology, language and culture of the Covenant, but she’ll have to learn to navigate the politics of the UNSC to get what she wants. Murphy will play Makee, an orphaned human who was raised by the alien Covenant and shares their contempt for humanity.

The series is produced by Showtime in partnership with 343 Industries, along with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television.

Halo reinvented how people think about video games and has grown into a global entertainment phenomenon, having sold more than 77 million copies worldwide and grossing more than $6 billion in lifetime total sales revenue. In its adaptation for Showtime, Halo will take place in the universe that first came to be in 2001, dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.

Kyle Killen (Awake) and Steven Kane (The Last Ship) serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Halo is also executive produced by Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television, in partnership with 343 Industries, along with director Otto Bathurst and Toby Leslie for One Big Picture, Scott Pennington for Chapter Eleven, and Karen Richards. The series will be distributed globally by CBS Studios International.
