George R.R. Martin on Game of Thrones Prequel House of the Dragon

-

A few days ago, HBO gave a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for a Game of Thrones prequel called House of the Dragon after a different prequel, The Long Night, was scrapped. Today, George R.R. Martin has posted a new blog entry talking about the developments.

Martin speaks in the blog about meeting Ryan Condal, who co-created the series with him. He said, “He is also a huge fan of my Dunk & Egg stories. In fact, that was the show he wanted to do initially, but I’m not prepared to bring Dunk & Egg to television until I’ve written quite a few more stories. Working with Ryan on the development of House of the Dragon has been a dream.”

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. Miguel Sapochnik will direct the pilot and additional episodes. Condal and Sapochnik will partner as showrunners on the series, which will be written by Condal.

Martin said of the series, “House of the Dragon has been in development for several years (though the title has changed a couple of times during that process). It was actually the first concept I pitched to HBO when we started talking about a successor show, way back in the summer of 2016. If you’d like to know a bit more of what the show will be about… well, I can’t actually spill those beans, but you might want to pick up a copy of two anthologies I did with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women and Rogues, and then move on to Archmaester Gyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood.”

Martin said that a writers’ room has yet to be assembled and that, though nothing was definite, they might revisit locations from Game of Thrones. He also wrote about the fact that he might even write a script or two, but clarified, “But…let me make this perfectly clear… I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered Winds of Winter.  Winter is still coming, and Winds remains my priority, as much as I’d love to write an episodes of House.”

Finally, Martin spoke about the cancelation of the earlier prequel series The Long Night, saying that he didn’t know why HBO decided to cancel it, and that it had nothing to do with the new series. He also praised writer Jane Goldman’s work and expressed his sympathy about the decision not to go forward with it.

Miguel Sapochnik won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series as well as the DGA Award for the Game of Thrones episode “Battle of The Bastards.” He was nominated for another Emmy in 2019 for directing the Game of Thrones episode, “The Long Night” and won the Emmy for Best Drama Series as an Executive Producer for the final season. In total, Sapochnik has directed six episodes of Game of Thrones, including “Hardhome” and “Winds of Winter,” in addition to the episodes previously noted. He also directed the film Bios for Amblin Studios starring Tom Hanks which debuts in the fall of 2020. Previously, Sapochnik directed episodes of True Detective for HBO and Banshee for Cinemax.

Ryan Condal was the co-creator and showrunner of Colony for three seasons. He was the writer of MGM’s Hercules and is currently adapting the graphic novel Analog as a feature for Lionsgate.
