Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Tops Joker for Second-Straight Win

Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil squeezed out a win over Joker at the domestic box office this weekend with $19.4 million, bringing its two-week total to $66.2 million. The Joachim Rønning-directed sequel made $64.3 million in 56 international markets and has grossed $228.1 million overseas (with $42 million coming from China), for a global total of $294.3 million. The first film was released in 2014 and earned $241.4 million domestically, $517 million internationally, and $758.4 million worldwide. Mistress of Evil stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow’s Joker took second place with $19.1 million, for a four-week total of $277.8 million in North America. Internationally, Joker added another $49.2 million from 79 markets and is up to $574.1 million, for a worldwide total of $851.9 million. Joker is now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time both internationally and globally, and internationally it is the third highest-grossing DC film ever. Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker was made for $55 million and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

United Artists Releasing and MGM‘s animated comedy The Addams Family climbed a spot to third with $11.7 million, to bring its three-week total to $72.7 million. Internationally, the film added $10.5 million and has grossed $11.2 million. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, The Addams Family voice cast includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Elsie Fisher, and Snoop Dogg playing IT.

Coming in at No. 4 was Sony Pictures’ Zombieland: Double Tap, which grossed $11.6 million and brought its total to $47 million after two weeks. Internationally, the movie took in $9 million from 40 markets and has earned $16.6 million. The first film was released in 2009 and earned $75.6 million domestically, $26.8 million overseas, and $102.4 million worldwide. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Double Tap was made for $42 million and stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch, and Luke Wilson.

Horror thriller Countdown (STXfilms) opened with $9 million in fifth place and received a C+ CinemaScore from audiences. The film, which cost just $6.5 million to make, also debuted with $1.7 million from 16 international territories. The Justin Dec film stars Elizabeth Lail, Talitha Bateman, Peter Facinelli, P.J Byrne, Jordan Calloway, and Tichina Arnold.




Screen Gems action thriller Black and Blue, starring Naomie Harris and Tyrese Gibson, also opened with $8.3 million in North America. Directed by Deon Taylor, the $12 million-budgeted film also stars Frank Grillo, Mike Colter, Reid Scott, Beau Knapp, and Nafessa Williams.

And Terminator: Dark Fate (20th Century Fox) opened in 10 international markets this weekend where it brought in $12.8 million. The movie opens in North America on November 1st.
