Maleficent Tops Domestic, Joker Dances to $737.5M Worldwide

The Walt Disney Studios returned to the top of the domestic box office with Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which opened to $36 million from 3,790 theaters, an average of $9,499 per location. That’s quite a dip from the original film’s debuted of $69.4 million in 2014. Mistress of Evil received an A CinemaScore from audiences and reportedly cost $185 million to make.

The sequel also brought in $117 million from 56 international markets, for a global opening weekend of $153 million. The top overseas market was China with $22.4 million, which was followed by Russia with $10.7 million and Mexico with $7.8 million. Of the global total, $8.2 million came from 1,374 IMAX screens around the world.

Directed by Joachim Rønning, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville.

After reigning for two weeks in a row, Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow’s Joker dropped to second place in North America but added another $29.2 million. After three weeks, the Todd Phillips-directed movie has now earned $247.2 million. Internationally, the hit film earned $77.8 million this weekend and is up to $490.3 million (the fourth highest-grossing DC film ever), for a worldwide total of $737.5 million. The top international markets are the UK ($49.9 million), Mexico ($36.4 million), Korea ($32.9 million), Brazil ($25.5 million), Russia ($25.32 million), and Japan ($25.29 million).

Joker was made for $55 million and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Coming in at No. 3 was Sony Pictures’ Zombieland: Double Tap, which grossed $26.7 million from 3,468 theaters, an average of $7,706. The first film opened to $24.7 million in October of 2009. Internationally, the movie took in $5.3 million from 17 markets. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the sequel received a B+ CinemaScore and was made for $42 million. The sequel stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch, and Luke Wilson.

United Artists Releasing and MGM‘s animated comedy The Addams Family dropped two spots to fourth with $16 million and has earned $56.8 million after two weeks. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, The Addams Family voice cast includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Elsie Fisher, and Snoop Dogg playing IT.

Gemini Man (Paramount Pictures) rounded out the top five with $8.5 million and has grossed $36.5 million after two weeks. Internationally, the Ang Lee film added $33.4 million this weekend from 59 markets to take its overseas total to $82.2 million (with $21 million coming from China) and global total to $118.7 million. Made for $138 million, the movie stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, and Benedict Wong.

The next five spots at the domestic box office went to DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio’s Abominable ($3.5 million, $53.9 million total), Focus Features’ Downton Abbey ($3.08 million, $88.6 million total), Roadside Attractions and LD Entertainment’s Judy ($2 million, $19 million total), STXfilms’ Hustlers ($2.055 million, $101.9 million total), and Warner Bros.’ IT Chapter Two ($1.5 million, $209.7 million total).

In limited release, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (NEON) continued to impress with $1.24 million from 33 theaters, an average of $37,616 per theater. The film’s total is $1.82 million after two weeks. A24’s The Lighthouse debuted in eight theaters, where Robert Eggers film earned $419,764 and averaged $52,471 per location. The movie stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. And Fox Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit opened to $350,000 from five theaters, an average of $70,000 per location. Directed by Taika Waitit, the film stars Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Waititi, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Sam Rockwell, and Scarlett Johansson.
