Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct Disney’s Live-Action Pinocchio

-

Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct The Walt Disney Studios‘ live-action Pinocchio movie, according to Variety. The trade says that Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz will produce through their company Depth of Field, with Weitz writing the script.

Paul King was originally attached to direct and David Heyman was going to produce, but both of them are no longer involved with the movie. Zemeckis is currently in post-production on The Witches for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Released in 1940, the original animated movie is now part of the celebrated Walt Disney Signature Collection. In the film, with his faithful friend Jiminy Cricket by his side, Pinocchio embarks on fantastic adventures that test his bravery, loyalty and honesty until he triumphs in his quest for his heart’s desire: to become a real boy.

Robert Zemeckis has directed such classics as the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Forrest Gump. For the latter, he won an Academy Award for Best Director and the film itself won Best Picture. Other Zemeckis credits include Death Becomes Her, ContactWhat Lies BeneathCast AwayThe Polar ExpressBeowulfA Christmas Carol, FlightThe Walk and Welcome to Marwen.

It was announced last year that Guillermo del Toro was also making an animated adaptation of Pinocchio at Netflix. He would direct, write and produce the stop-motion musical.
