Samara Weaving to Play Scarlett in G.I. Joe Spinoff Snake Eyes

-

Ready or Not star Samara Weaving is set to play Scarlett in the upcoming G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Scarlett is one of the original members of the G.I. Joe team and debuted in 1982. She was played by Rachel Nichols in the 2009 film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Weaving will join a cast that includes Henry Golding (Last Christmas, Crazy Rich Asians) as Snake Eyes, Andre Koji as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais as Hard Master, Ursula Corbero as the Baroness, and Takehiro Hira.

Snake Eyes, which begins shooting this week in Vancouver and Japan, is scheduled for an October 16, 2020 release. The Skydance production will be directed by Robert Schwentke (Divergent films) from a script by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner are producing.

Snake Eyes will mark the third G.I. Joe film produced by Paramount Pictures. The first film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, earned $302.5 million worldwide in 2009, while the second installment, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, grossed $375.7 million globally. Ray Park played Snake Eyes in both those films.

On the packaging of the original Hasbro toy, Snake Eyes was said to be proficient in 12 different unarmed fighting systems (Karate, Kung-Fu, Jujitsu) and highly skilled in the use of edged weapons. He had received extensive training in mountaineering, underwater demolitions, jungle, desert and arctic survival, and some form of holistic medicine. He was a qualified expert of all NATO and Warsaw pact small arms.

The mysterious character is one of the original and most popular members of the G.I. Joe Team, and is known for his relationships with Scarlett and Storm Shadow.

The Snake Eyes movie is said to center on the character seeking revenge for his father’s death by joining the Arashikage Clan, a ninja clan based in Japan.

Paramount and Hasbro are developing another G.I. Joe spinoff as well. Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are writing the script for what is described as an ensemble piece, with one of the characters said to be Chuckles. The character is known for his undercover and infiltration work.
