Lionsgate has hired Len Wiseman to direct the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, according to Deadline. Wiseman’s credits include the Underworld series, Live Free or Die Hard, and Total Recall.
The site says that the John Wick spinoff focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. The character made a brief appearance in the third film.
The movie is written by Shay Hatten, whose credits include Zack Snyder’s upcoming Army of the Dead and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Ballerina is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski, with John Wick star Keanu Reeves an executive producer. It’s unclear if Reeves will make an appearance in the spinoff.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed $323.4 million worldwide, with $171 million coming from North America and $152.4 million from overseas markets. The third film stars Keanu Reeves, Oscar winner Halle Berry, Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne, Marc Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, with Oscar winner Anjelica Huston, and Golden Globe winner Ian McShane.
Domestically, the first John Wick opened to $14.4 million in October of 2014 and went on to gross $43 million ($88.8 million worldwide). John Wick: Chapter 2 debuted with $30.4 million in February of 2017 and went on the make $92 million ($171.5 million globally).
Lionsgate has already scheduled John Wick: Chapter 4 for a May 21, 2021 release.
