James Wan took to his Instagram account last night to reveal that filming has started for his new horror film, which is titled Malignant. “First day of principal photography on the 10th feature film of my career,” the filmmaker said. “MALIGNANT is the official title. Really excited for this one.”
Annabelle Wallis, whose credits include The Loudest Voice, The Mummy, and Peaky Blinders), will star. Wallis previously worked with Wan on The Conjuring spinoff Annabelle.
The movie is based on a story by Wan and Ingrid Bisu, and will be produced by Wan and Michael Clear through Atomic Monster. It will be financed by Starlight Media and Midas Innovation, and distributed by New Line.
Though we have no details on the story yet, it is said to be a slice of horror Wan hasn’t yet explored.
James Wan is known for the Saw franchise as well as the films in the Insidious and Conjuring franchises. He directed Aquaman for Warner Bros., and the film passed $1 billion at the box office. Wan has a number of projects on the way, including the latest Conjuring film which is currently in production and will hit theaters on September 11, 2020. This past May, Wan joined Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking, Sierra Burgess is a Loser) to executive produce The Magic Order, a new series for Netflix from Mark Millar.
Wan is expected to begin production on Aquaman 2 after the untitled horror film wraps.
