Hayley Atwell Joins Next Two Mission: Impossible Movies

-

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and Hayley Atwell announced tonight that the actress has joined the next two Mission: Impossible movies at Paramount Pictures. McQuarrie posted the above photo of Hayley Atwell on his Instagram account, tagging her with the following caption: “Should you choose to accept…”

Atwell responded on her own Instagram account with the same photo spread out over nine tiles and saying: “Mission: Accepted. Though I’m not the sort to follow orders…”

She later followed up with another post that read: “I’m thrilled to have joined Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie for the next TWO Mission Impossible movies. To have gone from a classical play in the west-end to an audio book recording of a great new novel to a Disney/Marvel animation and now the female lead in a huge action franchise is the kind of variety that fuels my curiosity and keeps me learning and striving to be better and do better. I can’t wait to start sharing this adventure with you. Mostly in the form of effusive, sweaty ranting about stunt training while spontaneously vomiting with excitement/exhaustion.”

The actress is most known for playing Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and on her own ABC series. Her recent feature film credits include Blinded by the Light and Christopher Robin, while she’s also starred in the recent mini-series The Long Song and Howards End.

Paramount previously announced that McQuarrie is returning to write and direct the next two Mission: Impossible movies, with the seventh and eighth films arriving on July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022. Skydance Media founder and CEO David Ellison will again produce.

The next two Mission: Impossible movies are expected to be shot back-to-back.

McQuarrie has written and directed the last two films, which were both big hits. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was released in 2015 and earned $682.7 million worldwide, while Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed $791.1 million globally last year and is the biggest film in the franchise.

In Fallout, on a dangerous assignment to recover stolen plutonium, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) chooses to save his friends over the mission, allowing it to fall into the hands of a deadly network of highly skilled operatives intent on destroying civilization. Now, with the world at risk, Ethan and his IMF team (Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson) are forced to work with a hard-hitting CIA agent (Henry Cavill) as they race against time to stop the nuclear threat. The film also stars Sean Harris, Angela Bassett, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin.
