Focus Features announced today it will release Participant Media’s Untitled Tom McCarthy Project, directed by Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) and starring Academy Award winner Matt Damon, in limited domestic theaters on Friday, November 6, 2020. The Tom McCarthy movie will then expand on both November 13, 2020 and November 20, 2020.
A thriller directed by Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy and starring Matt Damon, the film follows an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.
The Tom McCarthy movie features a screenplay by Thomas Bidegain, Noé Debré, McCarthy, Marcus Hinchey. Damon is joined by co-stars Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin and Camille Cottin. Steve Golin, Tom McCarthy, Jonathan King, and Liza Chasin are producing.
Universal Pictures International will release in select international markets.
McCarthy’s credits also include The Station Agent, The Visitor, and Win Win. Spotlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and won McCarthy the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Director.
McCarthy also co-wrote the Pixar film Up with Bob Peterson and Pete Docter, for which they received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. McCarthy also wrote the film Million Dollar Arm and served as a director and executive producer for the Netflix television series 13 Reasons Why.
