New Line Cinema is bringing together the Mortal Kombat cast with some big new additions this week. Variety first brought the news the news that Ludi Lin (Black Mirror, Aquaman, Power Rangers) will take on the role of Liu Kang.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the Mortal Kombat cast also includes Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), Tadanobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok), and newcomer Sisi Stringer. Brooks will play Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, Asano is taking on the role of Raiden, and Stringer is set to portray Mileena.
They all join Joe Taslim (The Raid), who was previously announced to be playing Sub-Zero in the anticipated adaptation of the video game series. It has also been revealed that the movie will be rated R and will include fatalities.
Simon McQuoid is set to direct the new Mortal Kombat film, which will be produced by James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring Universe). New Line Cinema has announced that the Mortal Kombat movie will open in theaters on March 5, 2021, with filming set to start in Adelaide, Australia later this year.
Mortal Kombat debuted in 1992 when Midway Games released the first game. The franchise has already spawned two movies, one directed by Paul W.S. Anderson that was released in 1995 and a sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, debuted in 1997. There was also an animated series in 1996, Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, and the 1998 live-action series Mortal Kombat: Konquest, but both only lasted on season. Two Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series debuted in 2011 and 2013 as well.
