Mike Flanagan Says The Haunting of Bly Manor Is Much Scarier

-

As if The Haunting of Hill House wasn’t scary enough, creator Mike Flanagan says that the second season of the anthology series, The Haunting of Bly Manor, will be even scarier. Flanagan talked about the new season, which is based on Henry James’ 1898 horror novella The Turn of the Screw, in an interview with Birth.Movies.Death.

“We’re looking at all the ghost stories of Henry James as the jumping-off point for the season, so it very much is a whole new deal,” Flanagan told the site. “It’s a cool way to expand on some of the things I loved about season one, but within the framework of a new story, without having to be restrained by the decisions we made last time. For Henry James fans, it’s going to be pretty wild, and for people who aren’t familiar with his work, it’s going to be unbelievably scary. I already think it’s much scarier than season one, so I’m very excited about it.”

Hill House stars Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who played Nellie and Luke Crain, are returning for the new season but in new roles. “We’re hanging the season on Victoria Pedretti and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and in addition to them, there are going to be other familiar actors from season one,” Flanagan adds. “Beyond that, I’ve got quite a few candidates among new faces who I really love, but we haven’t formally cast anybody yet.”

Pedretti will play Dani, a governess who takes care of two very unusual children. Jackson-Cohen will play Peter, a charming young man who lives at Bly Manor and makes life very difficult for everyone who lives there.

The highly-anticipated The Haunting of Bly Manor will launch on Netflix in 2020.

The Turn of the Screw, originally published in 1898, is a gothic ghost story novella. Due to its original content, the novella became a favorite text of academics who subscribe to New Criticism. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted at by the story. However, others have argued that the true brilliance of the novella comes with its ability to create an intimate confusion and suspense for the reader.

Netflix previously announced that Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy signed an overall deal with the streaming service to develop and produce new projects, including the new chapter in The Haunting series.

In features, which are separate from the Netflix deal, Flanagan and Macy are in post-production on Doctor Sleep, the feature adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 follow-up to his seminal novel The Shining, starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, at Warner Bros. Pictures, for a November 8, 2019 release. Flanagan directed and penned the adaptation, while Macy produced with Jon Berg.

Following Bly Manor, Flanagan and Macy will tackle the Midnight Mass series at Netflix. That series is set at an isolated island where the community experiences miraculous events – and frightening omens – after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest.
