Rocketman and Eddie the Eagle director Dexter Fletcher will direct Sherlock Holmes 3 for Warner Bros. Pictures, according to Variety. Guy Ritchie directed the two previous films, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
The studio had previously set a December 22, 2021 release date for the anticipated third installment.
Starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, the first Sherlock Holmes was released in 2009 and earned $524 million worldwide, while Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows followed in 2011 and grossed $545 million globally.
“We hope to propel the story forward,” Law said previously about the third installment. “As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”
The Sherlock Holmes 3 script was written by Chris Brancato. Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are producing the new film.
Dexter Fletcher, who appeared in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, made his directorial debut with Wild Bill in 2011 and also directed Sunshine on Leith in 2013. He also took over from Bryan Singer as director of Bohemian Rhapsody.
