Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Cast in Mindy Kaling Comedy


Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has been cast in the lead role in the upcoming Netflix untitled Mindy Kaling/Lang Fisher comedy. Ramakrishnan will play Devi, an overachieving high school sophomore who has a short fuse that gets her into difficult situations. She was selected out of the 15,000 responses from around the world to Kaling’s online post about the open casting call. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, this will be Ramakrishnan’s on-screen debut. There will be 10 episodes in the series.

Co-created, co-written and executive produced by Kaling and Fisher, who also serve as showrunners, the as-yet untitled comedy is about the complicated life of a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl.

Writers/creators/showrunners/executive producers for the series are Mindy Kaling (Late NightThe Mindy ProjectThe Office) and Lang Fisher (The Mindy ProjectBrooklyn Nine Nine). The executive producers include Howard Klein (The Office (U.S.), The Mindy Project, Parks and Recreation), David Miner (30 Rock, Master of None) and Tristram Shapeero (Turn Up Charlie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). The show comes to us from Universal Television.

The series will be executive produced by Kaling and Fisher, and Kaling is not currently set to act in the project.

Mindy Kaling is known for playing the character of Kelly Kapoor as well as writing and producing the show. She also had her own series The Mindy Project. She has appeared in The 40-Year-Old VirginInside OutWreck-It RalphA Wrinkle in Time and Ocean’s 8. She is currently working on a limited TV series adaptation of Four Weddings and a Funeral at Hulu. She can currently be seen in the feature film Late Night, opposite Emma Thompson. She also executive produced and wrote the film. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Amazon Studios.
