Sean Penn to Direct Flag Day and Star with Daughter Dylan Penn

Two-time Academy Award winner Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River) will direct Flag Day, in which he will star alongside his daughter Dylan Penn (Condemned, Elvis & Nixon). Principal photography began this week.

Also joining the cast are Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, Milk, The Avengers franchise), two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (Fosse/Verdon, Fair Game), Dale Dickey (Hell or High Water, The Pledge), Eddie Marsan (Happy-Go-Lucky, 21 Grams), Bailey Noble (True Blood), Hopper Penn (War Machine), Miles Teller (Whiplash, Too Old to Die Young), and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings, The Dark Tower).

Tony Award winning playwright Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Black Mass, Broadway’s The Ferryman) penned the screenplay, which is based on Jennifer Vogel’s 2005 memoir Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life.

Based on a true story, Flag Day is an illuminating portrait of a daughter struggling to overcome the loving yet dark legacy of her con man father.

William Horberg (The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Kite Runner), Jon Kilik (At Eternity’s Gate, Babel) and Fernando Sulichin (Snowden, Spring Breakers, At Eternity’s Gate) will produce Flag Day, a Wonderful Films, Rahway Road, New Element Films and Clyde Is Hungry Films production.

Rocket Science and Wild Bunch will executive produce and are handling international sales, with CAA Media Finance, which arranged financing for the film, representing the U.S. and China rights. The executive producers are Christelle Conan, Anders Erdén, Peter Touche, Phyllis Laing, Devan Towers, Thorsten Schumacher, Vincent Maraval, John Wildermuth, Sidney Kimmel and Allen Liu. Funding is provided by Ingenious Media, New Element Media and Manitoba Film and Music.

Five-time Academy Award nominee Sean Penn won the award twice for his lead performances in Milk and Mystic River and is the acclaimed director of Academy Award-nominated Into the Wild, as well as The Pledge, The Crossing Guard and The Indian Runner.

Rising actress Dylan Penn has combined a successful modeling career with feature film roles in Elvis & Nixon and Condemned.
