Director Jon Turteltaub (The Meg) has signed on to helm Insane, about the ’70s and ’80s ad man Crazy Eddie, a.k.a. Eddie Antar, according to Deadline. The late Antar, who’s low-budget commercials played in the New York area decades ago, served six years in prison for security fraud. eOne is set to finance and Peter Steinfeld (21) wrote the script.
The company has exclusive rights from a deal made with Antar’s cousin and co-conspirator Sam E. Antar. Producing Insane is Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Peter Steinfeld and DeShawn Schneider, and Sam E. Antar will serve as Associate Producer with Mandy Stein.
The “Crazy Eddie” commercials played in the New York area with consumer electronics salesman Jerry Carroll who played Eddie. The memorable line was, “Our prices are insaaaaane!” Antar’s empire began in Brooklyn and became public after he opened 43 stores. Antar, however, was adjusting inventory to inflate the stock price and took money from the company.
Antar was later charged with stock fraud and fled to Israel. He was extradited three years after the charge. He served six years in prison and paid $150 million in fines. The company was sold and then went bankrupt. Antar died in 2016.
