In addition to the magazine’s cover story featuring new photos and details, Vanity Fair has brought online two videos about the highly-anticipated Star Wars movie. The first video shows how photographer Annie Leibovitz visited the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker set to capture the portraits of the cast and crew, and the second has the cover story’s writer Lev Grossman giving the inside scoop on the film. Grossman says what they know about Episode IX, what they don’t know, and what he can’t say.
Leibovitz photographed the cast of The Empire Strikes Back for Rolling Stone back in 1980, and beginning in 1999 with The Phantom Menace, has been visiting and shooting every Star Wars set for Vanity Fair.
J.J. Abrams returns to direct the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio. The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Matt Smith, Dominic Monaghan, and Keri Russell, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
Composer John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s A New Hope, will return to a galaxy far, far away with The Rise of Skywalker, opening in theaters on December 20, 2019.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Michelle Rejwan, and executive produced by Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin. The crew includes Dan Mindel (Director of Photography), Rick Carter and Kevin Jenkins (Co-Production Designers), Michael Kaplan (Costume Designer), Neal Scanlan (Creature and Droid FX), Maryann Brandon and Stefan Grube (Editors), Roger Guyett (VFX Supervisor), Tommy Gormley (1st AD), and Victoria Mahoney (2nd Unit Director).
