All the New Details About Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Today, Vanity Fair released new photos and a preview of what’s coming in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (You can check out the pics here). Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming film.

The magazine sat down with director J.J. Abrams in Wadi Rum, Jordan where they were shooting. We got a look at some of the new characters like Kerri Russell as Zori Bliss, who is in the Thieves Quarter on the snow planet Kijimi. We see Finn on an orbak with new character Jannah (Naomi Ackie), who is a Resistance ally. The scene was reportedly during a fight with the First Order. We see a shot of the Knights of Ren and one of Luke Skywalker with R2-D2 standing in destruction, though they are clearly not part of the same scene. (The Knights of Ren are all covered in dark fabric with masks.)

The third new actor in the film is Richard E. Grant as Allegiant General Pryde, whom we see with General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) on the bridge of Kylo Ren’s Star Destroyer.

We’re getting some old favorites like some of our favorite droids. C-3P0 does “something in this movie that surprises everybody,” according to Anthony Daniels who has played the role since the beginning. There are also new aliens. We also got a look at the Aki-Aki, natives of the planet Pasaana.

We see Rey and Kylo Ren battle with lightsabers, and according to the article, their Force connections “run even deeper than previously revealed.” In the article, Adam Driver who plays Kylo Ren calls it their “maybe-bond.” In a video on the site, we see a scene being filmed with Rey where she’s in front of a giant wave splash, which might give clues about a location. As you may know, time has passed since The Last Jedi, and Rey has reportedly almost finished her training.

There is a shot of Lando, Poe, D-0 and BB-8 in the Millennium Falcon. Oscar Isaac who plays Poe says that his character has become part of a group and a leader instead of the loner that he was.

There is also a shot of BB-8, Chewbacca and Rey in a speeding vehicle in a chase scene, so we have an idea of the pairings that are coming in the film.

J.J. Abrams returns to direct the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio. The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Matt Smith, Dominic Monaghan, and Keri Russell, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.

Composer John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s A New Hope, will return to a galaxy far, far away with The Rise of Skywalker, opening in theaters on December 20, 2019.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Michelle Rejwan, and executive produced by Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin. The crew includes Dan Mindel (Director of Photography), Rick Carter and Kevin Jenkins (Co-Production Designers), Michael Kaplan (Costume Designer), Neal Scanlan (Creature and Droid FX), Maryann Brandon and Stefan Grube (Editors), Roger Guyett (VFX Supervisor), Tommy Gormley (1st AD), and Victoria Mahoney (2nd Unit Director).
