Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords, What We Do in the Shadows) has been cast in the upcoming Avatar sequels. The news was posted on the franchise’s official social pages. The announcement reads: “Casting announcement! Jemaine Clement has been cast in the Avatar sequels as Dr. Garvin, a marine biologist on Pandora. Glad to have you aboard Jemaine! Clement is known for being one half of the musical-comedy duo Flight of the Conchords with Bret McKenzie, as well as appearing in films like What We Do in the Shadows and the animated film Moana. He can currently be seen in the FX series Legion.

James Cameron added: “I’ve loved Jemaine Clement’s work for years and I’m really pumped that he’s joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters.”
The news comes a month after the casting of Michelle Yeoh as scientist Dr. Karina Mogue, as well as a change in release dates. The second film, Avatar: The Way of Water, was scheduled to be released by Disney’s 20th Century Fox on December 18, 2020 and has moved to December 17, 2021. Avatar: The Seed Bearer was scheduled for December 17, 2021, but has moved to December 22, 2023.
Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa were set for December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025, respectively. They have now moved to December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the Avatar sequels. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, Edie Falco, and Brendan Cowell are also on board. The young members of the Sully family are played by Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, and Trinity Bliss, while the Metkayina Clan members are played by Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans Jr. Jack Champion is playing Javier “Spider” Socorro, a human teenager, born at Hell’s Gate but who prefers his time in the Pandoran rainforest more than the asphalt of Hell’s Gate.
While not confirmed, Vin Diesel may have a role in the Avatar sequels as well.
The Avatar sequels will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The James Cameron-directed sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
The first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing film worldwide with $2.7 billion.
