May the 4th Be with You: Happy Birthday Legion of Leia

Hey everyone! Happy May the 4th! It’s Star Wars Day, and it’s also Legion of Leia’s fifth birthday! It’s hard to believe it’s been that long. Though, now that I think about it, we’ve been through a lot together.

Back when this started, it was just going to be a Facebook community of like-minded fans who wanted geek women to have a place in the world, and for their voices to be heard. I asked people to change their profile pic to Princess/Senator/General Leia for the day to support women in the geek world on Twitter and Facebook, and to my surprise, thousands and thousands of people did. Celebrities, kids, fans of all genders took part. It actually made me cry at my computer in happiness.

So much has changed in fandom over the past five years. We went from having to use the hashtag #WhereRey because we couldn’t find female Star Wars toys, to a Wonder Woman film, a Captain Marvel film, Okoye and Nakia in the amazing and Oscar-nominated Black Panther, more female filmmakers on geek projects, the discussion about diversity in the superhero genre… it makes me think we’re on the right path, and that speaking out really does make a difference.

Things have changed around here as well, which you know if you’re reading this here in our new home at I am so thrilled to be a part of this site, and very proud of what we’re doing over here. In the future, we’ll have more of the Legion of Leia Podcast, which you can subscribe to here. We’ll have more reviews and op ed pieces, as well as some recaps.

I’m really excited about the future. Heck, we have the finale of the Skywalker Saga in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It’s hard to believe it’s so close. This has been a great year for geeks, with Captain Marvel, Shazam!Game of Thrones (no matter what you think of it, it’s a big deal), Endgame and now Episode IX. As a little kid, I never could have dreamed of a geek world like this.

On the darker side of things (and there is always a Dark Side of the Force), fandom has gotten a bit toxic. I’ll be addressing that as well in future stories and podcasts. Sadly, we lost Peter Mayhew this week, our beloved Chewbacca. It’s odd to think of him no longer being with us, just as it still is when I think of Carrie Fisher, but their stories will live on forever. I’m very hopeful for the future, happy that our geek world is becoming more open for everyone, and I’m grateful for all the support as our site has changed over the last five years. I’m so honored to be a part of your lives.

May the Force be with you, always.
