Willow Series in the Works for Disney+

-

Director Ron Howard was a guest on MTV‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast and revealed that Disney+ is developing a Willow series based on a pitch by Jonathan Kasdan.

Released in 1988, Willow was a story created and produced by George Lucas and directed by Howard. With actor Warwick Davis in his first leading role, the film featured pioneering use of digital technology by Industrial Light & Magic and remains a classic of fantasy cinema to this day.

“There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy,” Howard said.

“We are in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George Lucas always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, which he felt would be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

The filmmaker added that it would be a continuation, not a reboot. Warwick Davis would be in it and Howard said he hopes we’ll get to see the mature Willow in action.

In the film, when a good-hearted farmer named Willow Ufgood discovers a baby girl prophesized to end the rule of the evil queen Bavmorda, he sets out on an adventure to return the child to her people. Encountering all manner of creatures and characters, Willow finds both companionship and villainy along with a newfound skill as a sorcerer.
