Dwayne Johnson took to his Instagram account on Sunday to congratulate the cast and crew of Shazam! on its box office success, and to thank moviegoers for going to see it. Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions produced the film.
As Johnson says in the video, the villain and antihero Black Adam was originally supposed to have debuted in Shazam!, but it wasn’t working with them having to tell the origin stories of both Shazam! and Black Adam. Johnson is still set to play Black Adam and will now be introduced in a separate movie that he says is scheduled to start shooting in about a year.
Black Adam is based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck. Black Adam first appeared in the first issues of Fawcett Comics’ The Marvel Family in December 1945, and began to appear in the Shazam! comics in the 1970s.
Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Shazam! opened this weekend with $158.8 million worldwide. The film earned $56.8 million in North America and $102 million overseas.
Made for $100 million, Shazam! received an A CinemaScore from audiences and should play well in the weeks ahead with good word of mouth. The film was directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou.
