Shazam! Opens to $20.5 Million on Friday

-

Warner Bros. Pictures comic book adaptation Shazam! opened to $20.5 million on Friday from 4,217 theaters and has grossed $23.8 million if you include the early Fandango screenings. $2.6 million of Friday’s earnings come from 405 IMAX theaters. The movie is projected to bring in over $50 million for the weekend.

Internationally, Shazam! brought in $29.2 million on Friday from 79 markets. The film has grossed $44 million overseas so far, with $15.3 million of that number coming from China. While not included in the $44 million total, Warner Bros. is estimating that the movie has earned another $9.8 million in China on Saturday.

The film received an A CinemaScore from audiences and should play well in the weeks ahead with good word of mouth.

Shazam! is an origin story that stars Zachary Levi as the titular DC super hero, along with Asher Angel as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong in the role of super-villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Jack Dylan Grazer and Djimon Hounsou co-star. David F. Sandberg is the director and Peter Safran (Aquaman, The Conjuring and Annabelle films) serves as the film’s producer.

Paramount Pictures also released Pet Sematary, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel. The film grossed $10 million on Friday and is expected to make about $25 million for the weekend. The film received a C+ CinemaScore.

Directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, Pet Sematary stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, Jeté Laurence, Hugo & Lucas Lavoie, and John Lithgow.
