What We Learned from the Avengers: Endgame Footage Screening

The press conference for the upcoming Marvel Studios film Avengers: Endgame is this coming weekend, but press were treated to some new footage before the release. Though some of it was what was shown at CinemaCon this past week, some of it was new. Keep in mind that this Avengers: Endgame footage is going to be a little spoiler-y, but the spoilers are mild. Still, if you want to stay fresh, look away now.

Before the Endgame footage, directors Joe and Anthony Russo came out to welcome the press joking that they were excited to show “very little” to us. First up came a reel featuring the directors, actors and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talking about the lead up over the past ten years. Then we saw the footage. We’ll give you an overview, but some secrets will stay secret.

The first scene opened with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark playing that game (with a different name depending on your region) where you shoot small triangles of paper or metal through a goal made with your fingers that every kid played in class. Tony is teaching Nebula (Karen Gillan) to play, and she wins. You can see that something in her has changed in all the time she and Tony have spent drifting aimlessly in space.

Then we see Tony on the floor of the ship, talking to his half-destroyed helmet, as we’ve seen in the trailers. He’s leaving a message for Pepper, and from the sound of it, this is the last of many. It’s day 22 of their drifting, and he refers to Nebula as the “blue meanie,” but you can hear the affection in his voice. They managed to give themselves another 48 hours of oxygen, but it’s running out. He tells Pepper it’s always been her, and that he’s healed from an infection, but you can see that this is really it. Then we see clips from Nebula and Tony’s time together, as she lets him eat the last of the food, and later, as she places him sitting up in the pilot’s seat, gently. You can tell that she’s come to care for him.

The screen faded to black, and we find ourselves in the Avengers HQ, as the gang talks about whether or not they’re going to kill Thanos (Josh Brolin). Cap (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the rest are not quite sure if this is going to work, but Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) explains that it’s different now because they have her. Then we see the clip from the trailer where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) summons his new weapon right past Carol’s face, and says, “I like this one.” Rocket (Bradley Cooper) explains that Earth was ground zero for the Infinity Gauntlet attack, and no one had seen an anomaly like what happened here… until now. There is someone else in the room though, and that would be too big a spoiler, so we’re going to keep that to ourselves for now.

The Endgame footage was a tiny taste of what’s to come, and we couldn’t be more excited! Only a little bit of time left to wait. Avengers: Endgame opens on April 26.
