Disney‘s Dumbo lifted off in first place at the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $45 million from 4,259 locations, an average of $10,566 per theater. The Tim Burton-directed live-action adaptation also brought in $71 million from 53 international territories (including $10.7 million from China), to put its worldwide total at $116 million after one weekend.
Made for about $170 million, Dumbo received an A- CinemaScore from audiences. The movie stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Alan Arkin, Finley Hobbins, and Nico Parker.
Jordan Peele’s Us (Universal Pictures) dropped down to second place with another $33.6 million, which takes its two-week domestic total to $128.2 million. With an additional $46.3 million from 61 international markets, Us has now grossed $174.5 million globally. The $20 million film, written, directed and produced by Peele, stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Anna Diop, Evan Alex, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Madison Curry, Cali Sheldon, and Noelle Sheldon.
In third place, Captain Marvel added another $20.5 million this weekend and has now earned $353.8 million in North America after four weeks. The film also grossed $26.4 million overseas and is up to $636.8 million (with $151.5 million coming from China). That means the Marvel Studios release has now brought in $990.6 million and is set to cross the $1 billion mark this week. Captain Marvel was directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film stars Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
CBS Films romantic drama Five Feet Apart remained in fourth place with $6.3 million, to push the film’s three-week total to $35.9 million. Directed by Justin Baldoni, Five Feet Apart stars Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse, Moises Arias, Kimberly Hébert Gregory, Paraminder Nagra, and Claire Forlani.
Rounding out the top five was Pure Flix’s pro-life film Unplanned, which earned $6.1 million from 1,059 theaters, an average of $5,770 per theater. Based on the book by Abby Johnson, the film was directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman and stars Ashley Bratcher, Brooks Ryan, and Robia Scott.
Also opening was Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum, which debuted in 10th place with just $1.8 million from 1,100 theaters, an average of $1,636. The comedy stars Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dog, Zac Efron, Isla Fisher, Jimmy Buffett, Zac Efron, and Martin Lawrence.
