STXfilms today announced it has acquired domestic distribution rights to director Ric Roman Waugh’s (Angel Has Fallen) next film, Greenland, starring Gerard Butler (Den of Thieves, London Has Fallen) from Thunder Road Films and Anton. Chris Sparling wrote the script, with current revisions by Mitchell LaFortune.
Principal photography on the film, which follows one family’s fight for survival in the face of a cataclysmic natural disaster, is set to start in May 2019.
STXinternational’s John Friedberg previously acquired the international rights to the film, which was one of the hottest titles at this year’s European Film Market. STXinternational will handle international distribution of the film through its output partnerships and will directly distribute the film in the United Kingdom.
Greenland is produced by Thunder Road Films’ Basil Iwanyk (Sicario, John Wick), who also developed the project, with Butler and Alan Siegel via their G-BASE production company. Anton is fully financing and producing. CAA Media Finance arranged the film’s financing and represented the project’s domestic rights alongside Anton.
Butler is fresh off the critically acclaimed indie film The Vanishing and will next be seen in Angel Has Fallen, which is the final installment in the highly-successful Fallen trilogy. He produced the films as well. He recently produced the 2019 Sundance Film Festival title Them That Follow, starring Olivia Colman and Kaitlyn Dever.
Ric Roman Waugh recently produced, wrote and directed the drama Shot Caller, starring Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He wrote and directed the thriller Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Michael K. Williams, Benjamin Bratt, Jon Bernthal and Melina Kanakaredes for Participant Media and Summit. Prior to that, Waugh helmed Felon, from his own screenplay for Sony. He also produced and directed the documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me, released by Participant Media/Takepart.
