Netflix announced today that Patrick Brice (Creep, The Overnight) will direct There’s Something Inside Your House, based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Stephanie Perkins. Henry Gayden is writing the script for the film, which will begin principal photography this fall.
There’s Someone Inside Your House combines two different beloved teenage genres: the slashers that came to prominence in the 80’s & 90’s and the character-driven coming of age classics a la John Hughes’ films and American Graffiti. The book is officially described as follows:
“It’s been almost a year since Makani Young came to live with her grandmother in landlocked Nebraska, and she’s still adjusting to her new life. And still haunted by her past in Hawaii.
Then, one by one, the students of her small town high school begin to die in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, Makani will be forced to confront her own dark secrets.
Stephanie Perkins, bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss, returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.”
Brice is a writer/director best known for The Overnight, starring Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling, as well as Creep and Creep 2 starring himself and Mark Duplass. He most recently directed Corporate Animals, starring Demi Moore and Ed Helms, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight Section and will be in theaters later this year.
Perkins is the New York Times and internationally bestselling YA author of multiple novels, including Anna and the French Kiss. She has long loved the horror genre, and pays homage to several of the classics with this novel.
Gayden most recently wrote the DC film Shazam! with New Line and their Lights Out director David Sandberg, which opens April 5th. He recently sold his a pitch to adapt Last Human by author Lee Bacon into a film for Phil Lord & Chris Miller to direct and produce. The project landed at Sony/Tristar after a multi-studio bidding war.
Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and James Wan’s Atomic Monster are partnering on There’s Something Inside Your House, with Levy and Wan producing alongside 21 Laps’ Dan Cohen and Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear.
