Captain Marvel Earns $61.4 Million on Opening Day

Marvel Studios‘ Captain Marvel earned an impressive $61.4 million total opening day (including $20.7 million from Thursday previews). That marks the seventh-best Marvel Cinematic Universe opening day domestically behind only the three Avengers films, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3. The studio is projecting a three-day opening between $145 million and $155 million. The film received an A CinemaScore from audiences, meaning it will have positive word of mouth moving forward.

Internationally, Captain Marvel also continues to perform on the high side of expectations with an estimated $127 million collected through Friday and #1 western debuts in all markets. The opening day in China was $34.3 million and therefore the second-highest MCU opening day there behind only Avengers: Infinity War. Other territories the movie is playing in include Korea ($9.3M); Indonesia ($6.4M); Brazil ($5.4M); Russia ($5.4M); UK ($5.3M); Australia ($4.5M); France ($4.3M); Mexico ($4.1M); Thailand ($3.7M); and Germany ($3.4M).

Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. An all-star collective of accomplished writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch, and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.

The film stars Academy Award winner Brie LarsonSamuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Kevin Feige is the producer of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Patty Whitcher and Stan Lee are executive producers, with Lars Winther serving as co-producer/first assistant director and David Grant serving as co-producer.
