Sherlock Holmes isn’t going to be solving any cases anytime soon. Warner Bros. Pictures has just pushed back the Sherlock Holmes 3 release date from December 25, 2020 to December 22, 2021. That is the same date that Sony Pictures is planning on releasing Hotel Transylvania 4 and Universal Pictures has scheduled the Wicked movie. It’s also just five days after the release of Avatar: The Seed Bearer.
An untitled Warner Bros. event film has also been set for December 25, 2020 in place of Sherlock Holmes 3. We’ll have to wait and see what project that is.
Starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, the first Sherlock Holmes was released in 2009 and earned $524 million worldwide, while Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows followed in 2011 and grossed $545 million globally.
“We hope to propel the story forward,” Law said previously about the third installment. “As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”
While he’s not been officially announced, it’s expected that Guy Ritchie (upcoming Aladdin) will return to direct a script by Chris Brancato. Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are producing the new film.
