An animated Gremlins series is in development for WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, according to Variety. The trade says that the Gremlins series would follow Mr. Wing (played by Keye Luke in the films) as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogway Gizmo.
Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television will produce the series. Warner Bros. and Amblin produced the films as well. Tze Chun (Gotham, Once Upon a Time, Cold Comes the Night, Children of Invention) is attached to write and executive produce.
Directed by Joe Dante from a script by Chris Columbus, the first Gremlins movie was released in June of 1984 and earned $143 million at the box office. Dante returned to direct the 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which earned much less with $41.5 million.
Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates starred in the films, which were executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Steven Spielberg.
It is unknown when the WarnerMedia streaming service will launch, but a beta version will not feature original content.
