Dune Release Date Set for November 2020

Following a slew of casting announcements, Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that the Dune release date has been set for November 20, 2020. The studio had previously scheduled Fantastic Beasts 3 for that date, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens to that film. Dune will play in both 3D and IMAX.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049Arrival), the Legendary reboot stars Timothée Chalamet, Javier Bardem, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Josh Brolin.

Set in the distant future, Legendary‘s Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly-valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Ferguson will play Atreides’ mother, Lady Jessica, who escapes with him into the desert. Skarsgård will play Baron Harkonnen, whose family previously ruled Arrakis and has a long hatred of the Atreides family, plotting with the galactic emperor to destroy it. He is also the uncle to “Beast” Rabban (Bautista). Zendaya portrays Chani, who was played by Sean Young in the 1984 film, while Bardem is Stilgar, the leader of a tribe that helps Chalamet’s character. Josh Brolin plays Gurney Halleck, the warmaster for Atreides’ family and a mentor to his character. Momoa will play Duncan Idaho, a swordmaster in the house of Atreides who is the right-hand man to Timothée Chalamet’s father.

Filming will start this spring in Budapest and Jordan. Villeneuve is directing from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Villeneuve will also produce the movie along with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.
