Josh Brolin to Play Gurney Halleck in Dune

Yet another big name has joined the cast of director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot at Legendary. According to Variety, Josh Brolin (Avengers: EndgameDeadpool 2) will play Gurney Halleck, the warmaster for Timothée Chalamet’s family and a mentor to his character. Patrick Stewart played the role in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation.

Brolin joins a cast that includes Chalamet, Javier Bardem, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, and Charlotte Rampling.

Set in the distant future, Legendary‘s Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly-valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Ferguson will play Atreides’ mother, Lady Jessica, who escapes with him into the desert. Skarsgård will play Baron Harkonnen, whose family previously ruled Arrakis and has a long hatred of the Atreides family, plotting with the galactic emperor to destroy it. He is also the uncle to “Beast” Rabban (Bautista). Zendaya portrays Chani, who was played by Sean Young in the 1984 film, while Bardem is Stilgar, the leader of a tribe that helps Chalamet’s character.

Filming will start this spring in Budapest and Jordan. Villeneuve is directing from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Villeneuve will also produce the movie along with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.
