Javier Bardem to Play Stilgar in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune

Javier Bardem is in negotiations to play Stilgar in director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot, according to Variety. He will join a cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Stellan Skarsgard (Thor films), Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Charlotte Rampling.

Set in the distant future, Legendary‘s Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly-valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Stilgar is the leader of a tribe that helps Chalamet’s character. Ferguson will play Atreides’ mother, Lady Jessica, who escapes with him into the desert. Skarsgard will play Baron Harkonnen, whose family previously ruled Arrakis and has a long hatred of the Atreides family, plotting with the galactic emperor to destroy it. He is also the uncle to “Beast” Rabban (Bautista). Zendaya portrays Chani, who was played by Sean Young in the 1984 David Lynch film Dune.

Filming will start this spring in Budapest and Jordan. Villeneuve is directing from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Villeneuve will also produce the movie along with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.
