The Batman Will Show Him as the World's Greatest Detective

Matt Reeves, executive producer of The Passage, has provided The Hollywood Reporter with an update on his upcoming The Batman, which says they are targeting for a 2021 release.

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” Reeves says about his take. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

The Planet of the Apes filmmaker was also asked whether there’s been any casting yet. “There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly,” he said. “We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”

And the possible release date? “We haven’t been dated. I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.”

It is not expected that Ben Affleck, who was originally going to direct the film, will star. Affleck has played the Caped Crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, briefly in Suicide Squad, and in Justice League. “There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well. We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world,” Reeves said previously.

It is also not expected to be an adaptation of Batman: Year One. “We’re not doing any particular [comic],” Reeves has said. “Year One is one of the many comic books that I love. We are definitely not doing Year One. It’s just exciting to be focused very specifically on a tale that is defining for him and very personal to him. Obviously we’re not doing an origin tale or anything like that. We’re doing a story that is definitively Batman though and trying to tell a story that’s emotional and yet is really about him being the world’s greatest detective and all the things that for me, since I was a kid, made me love Batman.”

He added: “I’ve talked about making it a very point of view noir-driven definitive Batman story in which he is investigating a particular case and that takes us out into the world of Gotham.”
